PORTAL OF PRAYERS DEVOTIONAL BOOKLETS for the FALL quarter are available at the entrances into church.  One per family please.  Thank you.

THE OCTOBER NEWSLETTER is available for pick-up at each entrance into the church, Brandt Hall and the Welcome Center.  You can also access the newsletter online through Emmanuel’s website at www.emmanuellutheran.org.

THE FORT WAYNE LUTHERAN OCTOBER ISSUE is available in church and the Welcome Center.  It is also available on the FWL’s website, www.myfwl.org.

EMMANUEL’S MINISTRY PLAN 2011-2012 is available at the entrances into the church, the narthex, Brandt Hall and the Welcome Center.  This Ministry Plan is a detailed summary of our plans for carrying out God’s work at Emmanuel during the 2011-2012 ministry season.

THE CHURCH NURSERY is open from 7:45 to 11:45 a.m. for your use.

PRAYER CHAIN—If you would like to send a prayer through Emmanuel’s Prayer Chain, you can do so by calling Eva Mueller, 436-2885, or e-mail her at evamueller@comcast.net.

PARKING AT WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY—Due to growing attendance in our worship services, parking will be available for all our weekend worship services at Washington Elementary school in the parking lot on Rockhill and Jefferson, next to the playground.  If you are able, please consider using this parking option so that those who have a need to park next to church are able to do so.  We thank Washington Elementary School for graciously opening their campus to us.

CUP OF KINDNESS boxes can be found near all the entrances to the sanctuary.  The money collected is added to monies given by The Lutheran Foundation through Lutheran Social Services and given to families who have crisis needs.  Several of our own families have benefited from this fund.  Please share your quarters or dollars as you are able.

“FEED HIS SHEEP” SPECIAL FOOD BANK COLLECTION—We invite our members to bring food bank donations to the worship service, and during the offering place them in the special food bank collection box located near the piano in the church.  This is a great way to involve the children of Emmanuel in the stewardship of the church.

HOSPITALIZATION—Because of the “HIPAA” laws, hospitals no longer automatically call a church to inform them when a member has been hospitalized.  If you would like the church staff to know that you or a family member is in the hospital or will be going into the hospital, please let us know by calling the church office at 423-1369.  Thank you.

CHILDREN ARE TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT if they need to leave church for any reason.  Thank you.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHURCH CONTRIBUTIONS—1) If you use the blank contribution envelopes found in the pew Friendship Pads, please be sure to write your name (first and last) on the envelope or your contribution number so that your contribution is recorded properly.  2) When you make a contribution and list it on the “OTHER” line of your contribution envelope (or if you use the blank contribution envelopes found in the pews Friendship Pads), please designate in writing to what fund you would like that contribution to be directed.  Thank you for your faithful support of Emmanuel’s ministry.

On Halloween night, Monday, October 31st, Emmanuel is hosting their annual “Trunk ‘R Treat” event in the Jackson Street parking lot.  From 5:30-7:30 p.m., trunks will be open to trick or treaters, followed by food and fellowship.  This event will provide a safe “Trick or Treating” experience for the children and families of our neighborhood and congregation with goodies given out from decorated car trunks and plenty of games and activities to go along with it.  If you are interested in helping with this Outreach event, you can…

  • Provide a vehicle (can be a car, SUV or van, we need at least 20) in which the trunk has been decorated and supplied with goodies.
  • Donate candy or other goodies to help with the "treating." Lots and lots of candy donations are needed for this event as each year the turnout of our neighborhood and member families has increased. You can bring your candy donation(s) to the church office or drop them in the Trunk or Treat boxes located in the back of church by the greeting card display or in the Welcome Center. Thank you!!!
  • Sign-up in the back of church or the Welcome Center and indicate how you would like to volunteer.

Thank you for your support in providing a safe and fun Halloween!

GIRLS NIGHT OUT—Ladies, you are invited to our Thanksgiving Banquet. This will be held on Friday, November 4th beginning at 6:30 pm.  We will meet in the Activities Center for an evening of Counting Your Blessings. Please bring your favorite dish to share for our Banquet....you might want to bring the recipe to share also!  That evening we will be introducing the needs of a family that we will adopt for Christmas.  Please mark your calendars, sign up (Welcome Center or Narthex) and plan to attend this enjoyable evening.

SENIOR LUNCH BUNCH—Out next Senior Lunch Bunch will be held on Tuesday, October 18th with the fellowship hour beginning at 11:00 a.m. and lunch being served at noon.  Jeanne Showalter from the Allen County Council on Aging will be with us to share about the many programs available through this agency.  Cost for lunch is $6.00 and reservations can be made by calling the church office (423-1369) or signing up in the Welcome Center or the back of the church.  Deadline for reservations is Wednesday, October 12th.

GRIEF SUPPORT will meet on Thursday, October 20th at 6:00 p.m. at Hall’s Gas House on Superior Street downtown.  For reservations call Cal Schultz at 441-9591.

PRAYING FOR OUR NEIGHBORHOOD—Last February we asked all of you to pray for West Central Neighborhood -- one street at a time.  Although we might never be fully aware of the impact of our prayers, joining together as a congregation to pray for those who live and work around us is one of the most powerful and active things we can do.  In Luke 18:1 "Jesus told His disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." We are His disciples; therefore, we should always pray and not give up.  Please continue praying for our neighborhood -- one street at a time!

COOKIE DELIVELRY #23—The construction crew received our 23rd box of homemade cookies last week.  The message from our congregation on the box top said: "Praise God for your skillful work on our building, so that we can do His work in our building!"

THANK YOU, COOKIE BAKERS!—A very special thank you to JAN HOFFMAN, JOAN DAVIS, DONNA HOFRICHTER, and CATHI COUNTERMAN for providing delicious cookies during the month of September to our very appreciative construction crew!

Youth News...

SNA will meet from 6-8 p.m. in the Activities Center on Sundays, October 9th and 16th. All Senior High Youth are invited and encouraged to attend.

RAINBOW YOUTH will have Open Gym on Sunday, Oct. 9th from 1-4.  Bring a snack to share and your gym shoes.  You can even bring a game to play, or bring a friend along to share in the fun.  If you have any questions, please call Michele Anderson at 432-2538.

COATS, MITTENS, AND HATS—Donations of hats, mittens, and coats can be brought to the Church Office to be given to the students from low-income families as Washington School.  The need is great!

COLLEGE STUDENTS—Please let us know your school and address for the coming year. We would like to include you in our College Ministry Outreach.  You can call the church office (423-1369) and leave your information with the receptionist.  Thank you.

FOOD BANK—To provide basic needs for those who visit our food bank in October and to prepare for our Christmas families, we could use donations of spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cereal, boxed potatoes, juice, peanut butter, cake mix, frosting, mac & cheese, toilet paper, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, laundry soap, and dish soap. Cash donations may be placed in your church envelope and marked “food bank” on the “other” line.  Our pantry will be available for those living in the 46802 zip code on Thursday, October 20th from 3:30-5;30 p.m. in the St. John Lutheran gym.  During construction members may call Lana Hille at 423-12369 any weekday for assistance.

STEWARDSHIP MOMENT—17th Sunday after Pentecost — Philippians 4:4-13

In the closing verse of our Epistle reading Paul declared that “he can do everything through Him (Jesus) who gives him the strength.”  What a beautiful understanding of what we can do as God’s stewards when we use all that God has entrusted to us to give witness to the hope we have in Jesus and to bring honor and glory to the God we love and serve.
