Building Faith - FAQ's

WHAT IS THE BUILDING FAITH CAMPAIGN?building-faith-logo-simple

The Building Faith campaign is providing the resources necessary to carry out the expansion and development of our campus, in order to improve accessibility and create space to accommodate the growing needs of our congregation.

What, exactly, are we building?

We are building two things. Most importantly, we are excited to watch the Spirit build faith in the lives of everyone involved in this journey and in those whose lives will be touched as a result of it. We are also building an addition on the northeast corner of our campus that will add approximately 9,650 square feet of space.

What will the new space include?

The addition will consist of a three-level building, with two floors above the ground and a basement below. The first phase of the project – the accessible ramp on the west side of the sanctuary – was completed in late 2010.

How will the addition affect our historic building?

Emmanuel's historic architecture is one of our greatest physical treasures. Great care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the current building while pairing it with a modern addition that complements the historic aesthetics. As was the case in 1966 with the addition of Brandt Hall, an intentional decision was made not to copy the 1867 sanctuary. For our 2011 addition, architect David West of Design Collaborative has drawn inspiration from the designs of the past, while incorporating contemporary ideas to communicate the era in which this addition will function.

Who will build the new space?

The Building Faith Building Committee selected David West of Design Collaborative to serve as the architect for the project and Hagerman Construction to serve as the general contractor. The Building Committee, led by its Chairman, Scott Senger, worked closely with the architect and contractor to finalize the building plans for the new space.

Construction Schedule

When will construction begin and end?

As is the case with any major construction project, the timeframe within which the contractor and subcontractors will be able to complete the new addition depends on many factors, including the weather. With that in mind, the following is a preliminary estimate of the dates on which the various stages of the construction process will take place:

March 21, 2011

Site Mobilization Begins
Construction Fencing Installed
Jackson Street Partially Closed

March 28, 2011

Site Clearing Begins
Brandt Hall Vestibule Closed

April 4, 2011

Basement Excavation Begins
Earth Retention Work Commences

June 27, 2011

Building Shell Construction Begins

December 14, 2011

Estimated Substantial Completion Date

In the event this preliminary schedule changes in a material way, the Building Committee will do its best to communicate those changes.

Building Access and Usage During Construction

Which parts of the campus will be inaccessible during construction?

Most of the northeast corner of the campus will be inaccessible during construction, including entrances to Brandt Hall and the sanctuary on the east side. For safety reasons, a fence will be constructed which will temporarily enclose the entire construction site. All of Jackson Street located north of the Welcome Center entrance will be closed. No other streets will be closed during construction.

One of the first steps in the construction process is to remove the existing north Brandt Hall entrance. When this occurs, a temporary wall and doorway will be constructed at the hallway north of the existing restrooms. The doorway will be limited to construction access only.

During construction, the library materials will be unavailable, with the exception of Bible study resources, which will be housed in the auxiliary staff office located next to Mrs. Hille's office, and greeting cards, which will be available in the sanctuary narthex.

How can I access the sanctuary during construction?

The existing north and west entrances of the sanctuary will be open during the entire construction project.

Where will the accessible entrance to the sanctuary be located?

The new ramp located at the west sanctuary doors will provide an accessible entrance to the sanctuary.

Will the Brandt Hall restrooms be available during construction?

Brandt Hall will be without public restrooms beginning sometime in March or April and continuing until the new restroom facilities are completed. The contractor intends to construct the new restrooms early in the construction process, with the hope of allowing access to the new restroom facilities by early September. During this time, the school's restroom facilities will remain open and available for use. A temporary ramp will be placed at the west (courtyard) entrance to the Welcome Center to provide access to the handicap restroom located next to the school's office.

Where should I park during construction?

Parking spaces will continue to be available at both the Jackson Street and Union Street parking lots. In addition, parking will be available for all weekend worship services at Washington Elementary School in the parking lot on Rockhill and Jefferson next to the playground.

Where will handicap accessible parking be located during construction?

As part of the west ramp construction process, new handicap accessible parking spaces were constructed on Union Street close to the new ramp. In addition to the new spaces, accessible parking will be available in the Union Street parking lot. In an effort to minimize the burden for individuals using the new west side ramp, valet parking will also be offered during the construction phase. Details about the valet parking program will be announced soon.

Ministries During Construction

Will childcare be available during Sunday worship services?

Yes. Childcare will continue to be offered in the school nursery during construction.

Will Sunday School and Bible Classes be held during construction?

Yes. Information about the classes offered and locations is detailed in the Parish Notes.

Financial Matters

How much will the project cost? From where will the funds come?

The entire project will cost approximately $2.35 Million. Primary support for the project will come through the gifts of members and friends of the congregation, which were prayerfully committed during the recent Building Faith capital campaign. As a supplement, we have received a $300,000 grant from the Lutheran Foundation and congregational approval to use $250,000 from the William C. and Amelia Koch Capital Improvement Fund. As of the first of March, the Lord has blessed Building Faith with over $1,200,000, not including the Koch Capital Improvement Fund gift.

In order to finance the initial construction and until commitments from congregation members are fulfilled, we will obtain a construction loan that can later be converted to a permanent loan to the extent necessary.
